Dalton Development Partnership

The aim of the Partnership is to support and represent the residents of the Dalton area of the Borough of Barrow-in-Furness for the benefit of the whole community in Dalton.  We aim to do this by bringing together representatives of the Town, Borough and County Councils as well as voluntary, statutory and other agencies working for the benefit of Dalton. We have recently expanded membership to include the Community Association, Dowdales School, the Festival Committee and Churches Together in Dalton. Furness Enterprise also has a seat.

In 2005 we commissioned a  Strategic Review of the Town's needs from an independent consultancy Wavehill. This Review highlighted six strategic objectives on which to base future planning  namely:

  • To Strengthen the Retail Position
  • To Become a Key Visitor Destination
  • To enhance the Quality of the Environment
  • To promote diversification
  • To improve accessibility and movement
  • To promote indigenous business.

These objectives will form the basis for any future decisions by the DDP on financial or other support for a Project.  Some Projects such as a new Sports Hall and fingerpost signs for the Town Centre are already underway. We also held a Business Forum at Dowdales to bring the business community together and start the process of strengthening co-operation and developing a Business Strategy.  In order to implement the Strategic Review we are working closely with Askam and Ireleth Parish Council and plans are in hand to employ a worker to co-ordinate the implementation of the Review and help raise funds for the Partnership and other agencies in the two towns.

Current membership is as follows:

Dermot O'Connor - Dalton with Newton Town Council.
Gordon Murray - Barrow Borough Council.
Bill Smith - Cumbria County Council.
Val Robinson - Furness Enterprise.
Margaret Martindale - Dalton Community Association.
Zoe Guest - Dalton with Ireleth and Askam Festival Committee.
Allan Mitchell - Churches Together in Dalton.
Debbie O'Connor - Dowdales School.

In addition Phil Huck, Derek Brook and Ali Greenhalgh attend as officers of the Borough and County Councils and Fiona Thomson attends as Clerk.
